coupling is explicit or implicit?

Submitted by tala on Tue, 08/06/2019 - 18:38

Hi all,
According to paper of Zhou et al. (2010) with title "Discrete particle simulation of particle-fluid flow: model formulations and their applicability" and using formulation set II, the coupling is explicit or implicit?
In Christoph Kloss's paper with title "Models, algorithms and validation for opensource DEM and CFD-DEM" it is said that momentum exchange term is
split-up into an implicit and an explicit term.
As I compared the paper of Zhou and paper of Christoph the formulation of momentum exchange term seem to be different.

About smoothing and time-averaging of particle velocity (Us)

Submitted by enzu on Tue, 08/06/2019 - 07:07

Dear CFDEM community,

I am simulating a pipe flow using DNS-DEM with smoothing model since the particle size is larger than the mesh size. The model works fine as the predicted concentration profiles and velocities are in good agreement with experimental data. However, regarding the averaged particle velocity (Us) in a cell, smoothing for the Us is performed to “fill in” values in cells void of particles and values calculated in the cells (via Lagrangian-To-Euler mapping) are NOT changed, as suggested by the code

ISSUE COMPILING CFDEM-coupling LIGGGHTS public 3.7.0 WITH VORONOI package

Hey,

I want to add the VORONOI package to the 3.7.0 CFDEM-coupling LIGGGHTS public.

So I sticked to the tutorials and installed voro++

sudo apt install g++
cd ~
wget http://math.lbl.gov/voro++/download/dir/voro++-0.4.6.tar.gz
tar -zxvf voro++-0.4*.tar.gz
cd $HOME/voro++-0.4.*
make all
sudo make install
which voro++
/usr/local/bin/voro++

then i changed the text file package-liggghts-list.txt like this:

Ksl field mapping problem in cfdemSolverPiso

Submitted by saad2311 on Tue, 07/23/2019 - 13:59

Hey everyone !

Initially I ran a pisoFOAM (incompressible, laminar) till 250 iterations and then using mapFields, I mapped the inlet boundary conditions onto my new mesh. Although during mapping the MapFields maps only P,U and U_0.

The CFDEM (v3.8.0-3-gb237264) tutorial I took as reference is "/cfdemSolverPiso/settlingTestMPI".

Turbulent Prandtl Number (Prt)

Submitted by mardussa on Tue, 07/16/2019 - 05:21

Hi all,

I have been using the cfdemSolverPisoScalar solver for my simulations of packed bed heat transfer, and I have a question concerning the turbulent prandtl number (Prt) when it is set in the ./CFD/constant/transportProperties file.

I have found in literature that Prt is typically between 0.7 and 0.9, however in the /cfdemSolverPisoScalar/packedBedTemp example case, it has Prt = 1e15. This is more than just a small difference obviously.

About setting up a movable boundary of CFD

Submitted by Rachel on Mon, 07/08/2019 - 15:53

Hi all,

I have successfully simulated a few CFD-DEM coupling cases with fixed fluid boundaries. Recently, I am very insterested in how to set up a movable boundary of CFD part. For example, during the derformation of DEM particles, I also want to make the fluid boundaries change with the DEM boundaries. When I use Gmsh to generate the CFD boundaries, I found it cannot be changed during the simulations. Could anyone please share me any clues? Thanks ahead!

Best,
Rachel
