Volume Fraction Calculation

Submitted by NSalloum on Fri, 01/18/2019 - 09:46

Hello,

I am interested in calculating the volume fraction of my particles after filling a hopper, so I was wondering how can I do that as my geometry includes curvatures.

So may you please help me in that.

best wishes,

Thanks Christian,

But may you please guide me how to add this filter to Paraview.

best wishes,

It's on Tools->Manage Custom Filters [Import].

Hello Mr. Christian,

I used the filter you implemented in Paraview, but I got some inquiries that I hope you may please help me in:

1- I am getting the same "V_S" at different time steps, so how can I make sure which region is being considered for the void fraction calculation ?
2- The "Spheres" value is different than the number of particles given by Paraview at the last time step, so what is the reason for that ?
3- When you told me to know the filled volume using a CAD program, did you mean trying to draw a new 3D body over there ? (as the particles I am having on the outer layer are not perfectly aligned on a horizontal surface)
4- I am also interested in measuring the bulk density of the filled particles, so am I not supposed to use this volume I get from the CAD program to calculate it? And in this case, am I also supposed to exclude the overlapping particles?

best wishes,

1- depends on the source of the filter, I recomend using dump->clip->voidfraction
2- did you clip the data, can you provide a screenshot of the problem ?
3- I normaly do a "water filling" in CAD to compute the volume of a complex geometry and than using this as box volume for the filter
4- sorry I don't understand. When you know the "water filling" and the real particle volume you can easily compute the bulk density.

Thanks Christian for your continuous support.

3,4- The thing is that after filling the particles inside the hopper, the top outer layer of the particles shows more or less waves structure, and I am interested in measuring the bulk density of the particles forming this shape, so can I show this shape in exact representation in a CAD program? And I didn't get what do you mean by "water filling", I thought like supposing that some how water is filling the spaces between the particles and then the total volume is equal to this volume + the volume of each particle*number of particles. If this is what you meant , may you please tell how to represent the dump files I get from LIGGGHTS in a CAD program and how can I perform the "water filling" ?

best wishes,
