The simulation of sediment transport with CFDEM

Submitted by elham.nasiri on Fri, 10/10/2014 - 15:36

Hello Dear users
Good time.
I am a new user of CFDEM project. I am going to use CFDEM for simulation of sediment transport.
I have some questions. Please help me.

- What is the CFDEM solver for simulation of sediment transport?
- Can I use one of the exiting examples in CFDEM tutorial and change it?
- How do I mesh in CFD and DEM sections? Does the site contain particles is defined and mesh is given in CFD section? OR does the site contain fluid is defined and mesh is given in DEM section?
- How do I select the number of particles in DEM?

Thanks so much. Please let me know "Is it possible that share the scour simulation as one of the tutorial examples?"

Best Regards
Elham

Hi Elham,

I also would like to use the coupled CFD and DEM to study this sediment transport problem. I think CFDEM has defined the drag force from the fluid to particles, which is good. However, for me, I think most challenging part is the bonding model between DEM particles. I have tried to simulate the scour around pier, but it is unsuccessful. So later on, we could have some discussion on that problem and might be working together.

Hi Kun
I will be happy to conclude together. But I am bigineer and know few in regard this subject. Ok, CFDEM interchanges the drag and lift forces from fluid to particles, but why do you going to use the bonding model for particles? I think we shouldn't use this style!
Anyway, I'll wait for your guidances for starting!
Thanks

Hi Kun
Good time.
what solver did you use for sediment transport? did you write a solver for coupling interfoam and liggghts?

Thanks
Elham

Hi Elham,

The solver I have tried to use is "cfdemSolverPisoScalar", which has been already in the CFD-DEM. I am not sure if it is correct way to work on this problem, but I just have a try. Probably, the solver coupling interfoam and liggghts shall be developped for this simulation. I am still learning how to couple the new solver into the program.

Best wishes,

Hi,
I am completely new in CFDEM. I have previously developed and coupled a CFD and a DEM model to simulate the scouring in front of breakwaters. Now I want to use CFDEM for this purpose because my model had some limitations. I wonder is there anyone here used CFDEM for sediment transport or scouring simulation? I appreciate if anyone could tell me where to begin.

Hi Kun
I have the problem with inserting dense particles by using insert/stream. How did you insert particles for bed?

Thanks

I think right now, I just use the following commands to insert the particles in the bed:

fix ins surmat insert/pack seed 100001 distributiontemplate pdd1 vel constant 0. 0. -0.5. insert_every once overlapcheck yes all_in yes region bc particles_in_region 10000

I know the particles probably are not inserted densely at the time 0, so I have to introduce a vertical velocity to the particles as -0.5 to get them densely packed.
