I would like to know which is the difference between running LIGGGHTS with lmp_auto and lmp_openmpi.

That depends on your settings
That depends on your settings in Makefile.user
In terms of software, it's the same. lmp_auto was compiled with Makefile.auto (using Makefile.user as input) and lmp_openmpi was compiled with Makefile.openmpi). All of these files can be found in the MAKE folder.
