interFoam/rasInterFoam solver for CFDEM

Submitted by keepfit on Wed, 09/19/2012 - 18:03

Hallo Christoph,

I intend to couple multiphase flow using VOF method (e.g. atmosphere and water) with Liggghts. It seems that CFDEM only supports single phase flow right now. So i would give a try to make a rasInterFoam solver with CFDEMcoupling. Is there some useful papers or tips to do this?

Thanks.

Cheers, David.

Hi!

we've done a lot on that topic, see:

Hi Chris,

Last week our proposal to the swiss national fund to model the initiation of sediment motion was turned down because doubts about the feasibility of the model. We have nice experimental data and I want to apply CFDEM together with LES & dynamic mixed subgrid scale model & simple clipping filter as developed at the LTT Rostock for OpenFOAM, since as you prooved, turbulence is crucial.
We think about resubmitting with some validation expertise by Dr. Kloss, and have a meeting on that end of October. If you could give a comment on your doubts and believes concerning CFDEM & LES until then, I think this would help a lot in the discussion. The main point is about turbulence-particle interaction, but since we consider coarse gravel and not fine particles, all problems like particle clustering etc seem a minor problem to me.

Thanks for your impressing work and support (I yust dumped my self written OpenFOAM-Discrete Element coupling code from last year, you are so much further)

Thanks a lot for the first report, it was very useful ! That's a great Master thesis ! I tunned also my interFoam solver into CFDEM coupling. I still experience some trouble, I think mainly because of the bigParticle model. Did you used bigParticles in your weir flow ?

Also I wonder if the sub-surface flow is well modelled, I will try to see if one can recover Darcy's law.

For the RAS k-eps, there is the problem of the wall function. Where to define "the wall" limit on a granular and moving bed ? Still, it seems there is enough dissipation close to the bed do to momentum transfer to particles, but I doubt this is comparable to reality. Is the particle drag coefficient somehow replace the turbulent dissipation close and into the bed ?...

Cheers, and thanks again for all this incredible material !

Hi Joris,

bigParticle model makes sense usually for IB or when you really blow up your particle size to smear out their region of influence.

sub-surface flow should be captured nicely - try to do an Ergun test-case with your VOF solver.

havig a wall-function at the particle surface might be a nice challenge - but doable!
For our testcase the flow and turbulence for sim and exp. were comparable.

Cheers,
Chris

Hello Joris,

Did you get interFOAM with CFDEM running? Would you share your code?
I would like to apply interFOAM with big particles to a laboratory flume experiment we start next week.
So I try to save as much time as possible by reusing code.
Best wishes,

Albrecht

I am writing a solver for combining the interFoam with CFDEM. I know I have to write a createPhi.H code and include the eguation of the Phi in the code, but I do not know which header files (I mean .H files) I need to include in the "createPhi.H" code. Could anyone help me with that?

Hi, I'm new in cfdem. but I can compile and develop OpenFOAM code. I wanna create new solver like cfdemSolverPiso. do you have any tutorial about force and source term which we must add to pisoFOAm and create cfdemSolverPiso? my goal is add this source term and force between two phase flow and particle. at first I wanna develop pisoFOAM and create cfdemSolverPiso after that try to develop interFOAM and create cfdemSolverInterFoam.
plz help me to learn force and interaction between fluid and particle. thank you

Can anyone share the master thesis mentioned by Chris? The link is broken. Thank you.
