Hello Christoph,
Is it possible to get the relative density for the granular volume from the results of a LIGGGHTS simulation?
Thanks, Christian

Re: Relative Density
Hi Christian,
what exactly do you refer to by relative density - there are various definitions in the literature what that can mean.

Density Distribution
Hello Christoph,
Maybe "relative density" is not the best term if this leads to further discussions (therefore I changed the name of the topic). In the first place I'm just looking for a way to get the density distribution of some particles of different sizes poured into a box.
In a paper (Bierwisch et al, 2009, Die filling optimization using three-dimensional discrete element modeling) they are using Voronoi tesselation and a discretization of the complete simulation space to get a local density (volume fraction).
Any idea whether something similar can be done with LIGGGHTS+PizzaPy+ParaView?
Thanks,
Christian

Re: Density Distribution
Hi Christian,
yes, now it's more clear to me. I know the paper you refer to (it was actually on my desk ;-). They are actually doing a good job.
As for the question, there were already other people wanting to do Voronoi with LIGGGHTS results, e.g.
here: node/100
I referred them to http://math.lbl.gov/voro++/about.html by Chris Rycroft from U Berkeley, who wrote this package to postprocess LAMMPS DEM results. I don't know if anybody from the LIGGGHTS community tried it yet.
I know Chris Rycroft, and if you need more info, I am sure he can give you some hint.
We actually use also other techniques to calculate local density (= porosity) in CFD-DEM simulations, but I am afraid I can not put that online (yet)
Also, I am pretty sure paraview can do something here. It can do Delaunay out-of-the box, but I have never tried to get local density out of it.
You see, many possibilities - feel free to try what fits your needs best.
Christoph
