Coupling FEA and DEM

Submitted by zamir on Fri, 01/13/2012 - 07:28

Hey all, I just wanted to share this. I'm working on a tool-soil interaction problem in which both the displacement of the soil and the deformation of the tool is important. I will be coupling LIGGGHTS and Code Aster to perform the simulation. I have started a blog to document my progress (and to keep me motivated!!!)

It can be found at http://coolsimulations.wordpress.com

Please feel free to comment on my methods, give advice, or tell me I'm wrong. I want to thank the developers of LIGGGHTS for providing such a powerful, yet accessible calculation platform. I hope that one day I can make a significant contribution to the open source community as you have.

Thank you,
Zamir

Hi Zamir,

thanks for your feed-back and your positive words. Actually, this coupling you want to achieve sounds really great! As we have already coupled OpenFOAM(R) to LIGGGHTS, this can be a starting point for you. So you can have a look at the CFDEM library and you might be able to use/adapt it for what you want to achieve. Also, have a look at the "couple" directory that comes with a tarball. The way we built the coupling was actually to wrap around an object-oriented framework around that "couple" example.

Cheers, Christoph

PS: if questions arise during your work, feel free to use the develoeprs forum!

Looks cool!
just FYI - the next major release of LIGGGHTS (2.0) will have a framework that will allow deforming meshes

Cheers, Christoph
