filling of cylinder with raw particles

Submitted by Robert Blyth on Thu, 06/23/2016 - 11:52

Hello,

My final year part time master thesis is based on the shrinkage problem during the HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressing) process, which is based on my actual working experiences using the HIP process for an offshore oil and gas project.

Consequently I have a constructed the same dimensional cylinder (large volume cylinder) in autoCad Inventor replicating the same overall dimensions as previously used for this project. My thesis aim is to determine the various packing density values in the cylinder when raw particles are poured into the cylinder.

I would like to ask anyone in the forum or has used LIGGGHTS software, if some assistance can be provided on the means to set up a model in LIGGGHTS and to replicate raw powder being poured into a cylinder and eventually to determine the packing density values in the cylinder once filled.

Many thanks

Robert

As long as you only want to fill the cylinder there is an example called examples\LIGGGHTS\Tutorials_public\insert_stream\
The main problem is the "pressing", I don't know anything about HIP but from the name I guess it is pressed by a fluid / gas phase and not mechanically ?
The next problem is, that there is no model implemented which can represent compacting (there is a hysteresis model which allows plastic overlapping, but it's known only to work singlecore)
The standard Hertz Modell will decompress when unloading and you will never get real voidfraction in your system.

I've written some tools to calculate density values of a region using monte carlo approach to take the particel-overlapping in DEM into account, read here why and how:

I'm not an associate of DCS GmbH and not a core developer of LIGGGHTS®

Thanks Christian,

Are you available to discuss as it would be quicker than writing a long message?

ok and thanks. I'll proceed in the forum.

I can't find the tutorial "examples\LIGGGHTS\Tutorials_public\insert_stream" - is this tutorial still available for review?

Also can you please send me the paraView filter and simple testcase for the filter from the Monte Carlo approach stated in your previous link.

Many thanks

Hello Andreas,

Thanks for the reply. I can now see three files and two directories. If I want to run the n.insert_stream, how do I do this?

Thanks again
