Calibrate spheres to mimic real soils

Submitted by gukargl on Mon, 07/01/2013 - 15:37

Hi,

What would be the best way to calibrate the simulated particles to behave like a real granular soil and how to demonstrate this?
Is there a way to run some virtual triaxial and shear tests which can be compared to real measurements?
Has somebody done already so and would be willing to share some information?

Cheers
Günter

There is a textbook on this subject: Particulate Discrete Element Modeling: A Geomechanics Perspective by Catherine O'Sullivan. As well, there is a paper, Utili and Nova 2008, that actually publishes DEM paramters from calibration studies. Utili and Nova (2008) only describes underconslidated soils, and also, only in 2d. A quick lit search will yeild many papers that describe calibration methodology. However, it is very much non-standardized and you will likely have to do some of your own parameter studies.
